There are several different stories behind the many Christmas traditions we have today
The evergreen tree was an ancient symbol of life in the midst of winter. The legend had grown that when Christ was born in the dead of winter, every tree throughout the world miraculously shook off its ice and snow and produced new shoots of green.
One of the most convincing story goes like St. Boniface, who is credited for converting many Germans to Christianity, came across a group of Pagans worshiping an oak tree. This made him angry, so he cut the tree down. What sprouted up in its place was a fir tree. St. Boniface took this as a sign from God, and it has been a Christian symbol ever since.
Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. Martin Luther one day walking toward his home on a winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.
Today it’s a festival of happiness and joy shared around the world. Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, just to make everything softer, peaceful and more beautiful.
